Tonight, I was not feeling that inspired to play any specific tune, so I turned to Cole’s 1000 Fiddle tunes, and picked out a Jig. I played through a couple of Slip Jigs, and there’s one that I will be playing for you soon, but I really don’t have the feel of the slip jig internalized yet, and I want to do it justice when I do it. 🙂
The jig I picked was Sleeping on a Door-Step.
Sleeping on a Doorstep accoring to Fiddler’s Companion
SLEEPING ON A DOORSTEP. American, Jig. G major. Standard tuning. AABB. Composed by Conn. Regan. Cole (1000 Fiddle Tunes), 1940; pg. 73. Ryan’s Mammoth Collection, 1883; pg. 105.
Really liked this jig, had a great British Isle feel. Can’t believe you just worked that up! You are a quick study.
Thanks, Hans. It’s a fun tune, and it was quite a challenge to work tunes up so quick. I do like a challenge. 🙂 I really like the picture of a fiddler coming home late from a gig, maybe after having a couple of drinks, and his lady making him sleep outside on the doorstep.
Excellent musical performance !
Thanks, Michael.
Fun Jig tune! Thanks.
It sure is, and what a great name. 🙂 I can just imagine…
Vi, you keep mentioning Cole’s 1000 Fiddle Tunes, but I can’t seem to find this on google. I’m confused, is it actually “Ryan’s Mammoth Collection” that you are referring to and perhaps Cole’s was the original publication? It sounds like an awesome collection.
Hi Ria,
Cole’s 1000 Fiddle Tunes was basically a reissue of Ryan’s Mammoth Collection. It was published by the Cole Publishing Company of Chicago in 1939. You can find it by searching One Thousand Fiddle Tunes on Google, or Amazon. Or you can use Ryan’s Mammoth Collection which was reissued by Mel Bay recently. Either way, you will find those tunes. It’s a fantastic collection of old fiddle tunes!
Thanks,
Vi
