Hi I’m Vi Wickam, and here’s another myTalentForge.com Quick Tip!
What in Sam Hill is rubato, you may ask?! Well, lots of people are wondering what is rubato?
Now, there’s a rule of rubato, as well. But we’ll get to that next.
Rubato means playing with expression. It means playing with your heart. Especially as it applies to slower tunes.
So when I’m playing a song like Aura Lee […]… I don’t play it exactly the same every time. I don’t play it with the same exact timing every time.
I let my heart lead and express the melody as I would sing it.
Rubato is something that you would use as if you were singing this song through your instrument.
Now, what is the rule of rubato, you might ask? And this is not Mr. Roboto. This is not “row-bo-to”. This is ru-bato – I believe it’s an Italian word.
But, it should be singfully, as you would sing it.
The rule of rubato is what you take, so the time you take- the extra time you take- you must give back.
So, if I play one note slower, soon after I must play a faster note. I must make it up and I must keep in time- keep in the framework of the timing of the song.
So that the song doesn’t just slow down. We don’t want to slow down the whole song. We’ll stretch a note- and if we stretch a note, we have to shrink the next note.
Rubato is like a rubber band – it’s the rubato rubber band! When we stretch a note, soon after, it’s got to have to come back together, and we shrink a note.
So any number of beautiful, slow tunes can benefit from rubato. And if you’re going to use rubato, you must follow the rule of rubato.
And that’s the rule of rubato! This is another myTalentForge.com Quick Tip! I’ll see you next time.
