I’m back with another tune in my New Tune Challenge! I wrote this tune this last week, after Sherri Wortham suggested that I should write a tune for JC Hounshell.
JC’s a great Texas Fiddler. I’ve judged the Grand Lake American Heritage Fiddle Fest with him a number of times, and I learned a couple of my favorite waltzes from JC.
This tune is really a reel, but I called it Uncle JC’s Hornpipe in honor of JC Hounshell.

If you know Uncle Herman’s Hornpipe, you might hear that’s where the “uncle” came from. After the tune came out, I was like, “Oh, this sounds a little bit like Uncle Herman’s Hornpipe,” though clearly not the same tune. And, I remember that JC liked Uncle Herman’s Hornpipe, which makes it work especially well.
* The goal of this project is to get you to respond. I’m going to play the tune, and then I want to hear your take on this tune. I want to hear your version, what you do with it.
I want to see what you put together for this tune! I want to hear your versions!
Listen to my recording, learn it by ear or by the sheet music below, and record your version and send me a link. You can post your link in the comments below, or on my Facebook page. And, if you want to just share it with me (not publicly), you can share the link with me on my contact page.
