[The song I play at the beginning of this Quick Tip is called Nymrod Hornpipe from my Fiddle Tune a Day Series.]
Hi I’m Vi Wickam. And this is another Quick Tip.
We’re starting at the end of the Quick Tip world! I’ve got Quick Tips for you today though!
This Quick Tip is all about reading music. Now, some people don’t think about reading music as relating to fiddling, but it really does.
This Quick Tip is just a simple thing you can keep in mind if you’re having a little bit of trouble recognizing the notes on the staff.
That trick is that you can think about the lines as being odd-numbered fingers. And the spaces being even.
So, lines are odd, spaces are even.
And you can look at this all through, but the G- which is open, is on a space. The D- which is open, or a 0, is on a space. A and E are also on spaces and they are open.
So this is awfully handy! All the open strings are on spaces.
The second fingers, if we’re in first position, are also all on spaces. First and third finger in first position are all going to be on lines.
The bottom line is first finger on the D string. And going up… third finger, first finger, third finger, and first finger.
So that’s your trick. It’s just a Quick little Tip! A little trick to make it easier to read sheet music on your violin…
Which is spaces are even and lines are odd.
That’s your trick for today. Have a fantastic week! I’ll see you next time!
