Find an Expert – Quick Practice Tip

Find more Quick Tips and lessons by Vi Wickam and other teachers at http://www.myTalentForge.com.

Hi I’m Vi Wickam and this is your [my] Talent Forge Quick Tip of the Week!

Something for you to do when you’re not sure what to do on your instrument. When you’re lacking inspiration and you want to take yourself somewhere new.

When you’re a little burned out, you’re a little tired of what you’ve been playing, you feel like you’re not going anywhere.

Find somebody who’s a master- somebody who you really like their fiddle. Or banjo player, or guitar player- but you really like the notes they choose! Or mandolin player!

You like how they play and you’d like to play a little more like that.

Listen to it and copy it. Find a solo from somebody who’s a great player- a master. Somebody who you love how they sound, and learn the solo.

How you do that specifically is a whole other question- but there are tools that will help you slow down. You can hire someone to transcribe it for you if you can’t figure it out on your own.

But listen to it over and over and over. Get it into your head. Get that master that is playing, soak into your playing.

Listen to them, listen to them, and listen to them until you can sound a little more like them.

When you’re lacking inpsiration, find a master and copy them.

I think it was Picasso that once said- it could’ve been someone else famous- but he said, good artists borrow, but great artists steal!

Don’t be afraid to steal a lick from a great fiddler. Steal a lick from Benny Thomasson or Vassar Clements or Aubrey Haynie or Bruce Molsky or Matthew Hartz… or whoever your favorite is!

Steal a lick, have some fun, take your playing to the next level, and inspire yourself with the fiddling of a master!

Have a great day! See you next time!

P.S. Some of my favorite Inspiring experts are:

  • Vassar Clements
  • John Hartford
  • Sam Bush
  • Aubrey Haney
  • Joe Venuti
  • Buddy Spicher
  • Bruce Molsky
  • Orville Burns
  • Matthew Hartz
