WOW! Another crazy time trying to find out the history of a tune. Who would have thought that a tune like Draggin’ the Bow was so poorly documented online. Just finding the author was a crazy chore. As it turns out Curt Massey wrote the tune, but I couldn’t find the exact date. I did find that it was recorded in the mid 30’s (between 34 and 36). Â Other than that, there are lots of people who have recorded it since.
I also found this little bit of history about Curt Massey that you might find interesting.
And, I think it’s a really fun tune to play – especially the triple shuffle!

Country Music Sources (Meade Spottswood, Meade) suggests it source to be a variety of Ragtime numbers the earliest being Bennie Moten’s Kater Street Rag from 5/15/25. You can hear it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=456JCbDsVRg . This and all the other rags noted by Country Music Sources and have that generic ragtime structure. So, whether it comes from an actual tune or if the composer just took that structure and came up with it, is anybody’s guess. Curt Massey is credited as the composer, but I wonder since there is an earlier recording and you can’t take anyone’s word on this kind of thing.

that was great.

Love it! You make that look so effortless.
Howard Lee Harkness says
That triple-shuffle is quite impressive! It's a bit like watching a claw-hammer banjo player at flank speed – there is just no way for the eye to correlate that motion with the sound!
I'm gonna have to learn that technique!
Vi Wickam says
Thanks, Howard. It's one of those techniques that is really uncomfortable until you start to feel the groove, and then it becomes pretty easy. Starting out slowly with open strings doing high low low high low low high low low high low low and working up your speed with the metronome is the way to tackle it.
Vi Wickam says
The only way it becomes effortless is with many hours of practice. 😉

The late, great Cajun fiddler, Hadley Castille does a great version of this song on youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxFM6Ymh4m4. That’s not to say yours isn’t a terrific version; it is. You really capture the flavor of music of that era, though it helps if you pretend it’s in mono, and not stereo.

Thanks for the Share, Tete!
