Hi I’m Vi Wickam, with another MyTalentForge Quick Tip of the Week!
Do not fear failure. Really.
I mean, we all screw up. You know we all screw up. What are you afraid of?
I screw up all the time. That’s just a part of life.
Failure is an opportunity to try again, and to try better.
So, when you start playing, when you’re playing in public, when you’re playing for recording, when you’re playing just for yourself- practicing, don’t be afraid of screwing up because if there’s one thing that fear will do, is point you in the direction of the fear.
Now, let me explain… If I’m afraid that I’m going to screw up, all my mind is focused on is, “Screw up.” Our subconscious mind doesn’t understand negatives, all it understands is the message “Screw up.”
Now, I don’t want to screw up, but if I’m thinking about screwing up, what do you think I’m going to do? I’m going to screw up.
So instead of thinking of screwing up, I just need to focus on something different. I need to focus on having fun or the beauty of the music.
And if I can put myself in that moment, instead of being afraid of failure, knowing that at some point I will screw up.
I can always play the song again.
Nobody’s going to die. That’s the beauty of this. Nobody’s going to die when I screw up… and I am going to screw up!
So enjoy your music, don’t fear failure, know that you are going to screw up. We all do.
And know that that’s an opportunity to try again and try again better.
That’s myTalentForge Quick Tip this week. I’ll see you next week!
