There isn’t much information online about Blue Bonnet Rag, except that it was recorded on Capitol Records by Speedy West and Jimmy Bryant in 1955. The more interesting story is that I recorded this at the Rocky Mountain Regional Fiddle Championships in Casper, Wyoming. Blue Bonnet Rag was the signature tune of Dick Hornbuckle, a Casper, Wyoming fiddler. Dick was quite a memorable character, and Ann Robinson created a Dick Hornbuckle memorial contest where we each played Blue Bonnet Rag, and then talked a little bit about a memory we had of Dick Hornbuckle. A little bit of this is at the end of my video, but I really wish I had got Ann Robinson singing the lyrics that she wrote to this melody. They were killer. Thanks to Tyler Enders, who played Twin Fiddle with me, and to Dick Enders, Jesse Morrell, and John Lardinois who played some great rhythm for us. And to Ed Carnes for his amazing videography.
UPDATE FROM PETE MARTIN:
Hi Vi,
Just saw your video on this, very cool. The Western Swing band steel player plays this so I’ve been looking at vids. It is by Leon McAuliffe, Will’s long time steel player.
Just thought you like to know.
Pete

Lovely performance.
Lovely performance
This was quite a special time for me. It was the last time I got to see and play music with Jesse Morrell before he passed away.
Wow! Nice!
Awesome.
Thanks! I always got a charge out of playing music with Jesse. He was my favorite guitar player ever.
Thanks! This was a fun group of guys to play music with.
