Arkansas Traveler: Fiddle Tune a Day – Day 1

A Journey Begins

This is the first day of my Fiddle tune of the day project. For the next year, I will be posting one new fiddle tune to YouTube each day. Some of them will be me playing solo, and when I can I may have an accompanist, or even another fiddler.

I hope that you enjoy my fiddle tune a day series. If you have suggestions of tunes you would like to hear, please post them as comments below.

Hi, Vi! I love the fiddle tune a day! Would you do the old folk song “Dance, Boatman, Dance”? And when you do can I feature it on my new genealogy web site? I am focusing on the Ohio river region as my research specialty. And that song was about the Ohio. My site isn’t finished yet, but once it is I would link back to your own site. What do you say? Otherwise, my site visitors are going to have to put up with my banjo playing!

Jumping in kind of late here, just signed up May 2, and I am absolutely loving this. As a history buff, as well as fiddle tune lover, I really appreciate the background information and personal stories on all the songs you play. This is such an amazing service to the sometimes mysterious fiddle world 🙂 I have been going through some of the earlier days you recorded, and listening to some favorites. You asked for suggestions, and I would really love to hear a song that I heard at a jam once. Ricky Turpin and Carl Hopkins were jamming, and Ricky played one called Florida Boys? that was just amazing. You may have already recorded this one, I haven’t exhausted the year to date yet, but if you haven’t yet, and know it (I think that was the name, or something along those lines), I would love to hear it again 🙂 Thanks so much for recording Fiddle Tune a Day!

Thanks for tuning in, Laurie. I haven’t heard Florida Boys before, but I will check into it. I’m adding it to my tunes to learn list. 😉

That is likely, Anders. I definitely have listened to that album of Eck's, and it's bound to creep into my fiddling when I listen to it enough. 😉 Although, I didn't intentionally take any of the licks from there.

Hi Cody, I actually played 2 tunes by the name Jack of Diamonds during Fiddle Tune a Day, and another tune (Mason's Apron) that was morphed into another tune in the Texas Tradition also called Jack of Diamonds. Here are the Links:

Hi Vi, I discovered you just in time to be able to enjoy you once a day. Here's a challenge for you. I once saw a man play "Angeline the Baker", which is usually thought of as a banjo tune unaccompanied on the fiddle. Would you be up for trying that?

    Do you know Patti Kusturok

      Hi Steve,

Thank you. I have lessons for quite a few (but not all) of these tunes at: https://www.mytalentforge.com .

If you click on lessons at the top, you will see the lessons available grouped by a number of different ways, by series, by instrument, by teacher, etc. If you are interested in specific tunes, let me know, and I will let you know about those lessons.
