4th Finger Drones for Fun and Intonation

Hi I’m Vi Wickam and this is another Quick Tip of the Week!

This one is specifically for violinists, violists, cellist, and other strings players.

When you’re working on your intonation, the next step up from playing along with an open string drone is to play along with a 4th finger drone.

So, for instance, […]- we get our 4th finger good and in tune… And then we can play […].

This gets us comfortable with double stops. It also gives us a check because we’ve got our 4th finger already checked with the open string […].

And get them in tune before we do it! 4 with 1- that’s going to be a 2nd, so it’ll be a little weird.

Or you can go […].

If you really want to be advanced, you can do the doubles and triple, the diminished fifth, the augmented fourth…

It’s really hard, or more challenging, with your 4th finger than your third finger, or than any of the other combinations.

But… 4th finger drones! Play some 4th finger drones! Do it on all of the strings. Have fun with it!

It’ll help you with your double stops, it’ll help you with your intonation, and what could be more fun than 4th finger drones?!

Have a great week! See you next time!
