Fort Collins Celtic WorkshopsI will be working with the extraordinary dulcimer player Steve Eulberg to put on a Celtic Music workshop on March 10th at Boomer Music in Fort Collins:

Steve Eulberg will provide instruction for playing Celtic Music on both kinds of dulcimers, mandolin and guitar. $20 per workshop in Advance/$25 at the door. See below for all day price.

Vi Wickam will provide Beginning & Intermediate Instruction on Fiddle in the afternoon.

Northern Colorado Fiddle Camp 2011

Northern Colorado Fiddle Camp is for Beginning to Intermediate violin and fiddle students between the ages of 6 and 16. Taught by Champion fiddlers, Vi Wickam and Cody Stadelmaier, students will learn technique, ear training, and fiddle style while they have a great time enjoying music. Northern Colorado Fiddle Camp will be held at Magnolia Music Studio July 11-15 from 9:00AM to Noon each day.

Hey All,

The first How to Play Fiddle in a Band workshop went well, but we really didn’t have time to interact and give each member an opportunity to “play in the band”.

This time, we are going to be interactive. Greg Fisher has volunteered to help out, and we will be playing some fun oldtime songs and giving you all an opportunity to play lead and harmony.

The Songs we will be playing are:
Rollin In my Sweet Baby’s Arms – A
John Henry – G
Tennessee Waltz – D

The Keys listed are only suggestions, and if you prefer to play it in a different key, that is fine with me. :)

Bring your fiddle, and any other instrument you wish. Other instrumentalists are welcome as well. This will be a fun time, and less structured than most of the workshops have been.

Playing Fiddle in a Band Workshop Notes

Here are the notes from our November fiddling workshop. We talked about starting out with playing simple slow notes in the background, and progressing to  rhythmic  accompaniment, licks, solos, and harmonies.

We also covered big picture approach issues, including playing like you mean it, not stepping on the soloist, playing with feeling, and listening for space. And, never take all of the space that’s available.

If it hurts, stop playing. Try to be relaxed in your approach and posture.

Warming up:

Warmup before you play every time. I also warmup when I wakeup in the morning.

Stretch after you play every time. I also stretch before I go to bed at night.
