Hi, I’m Vi Wickam, and this is a Quick Tip on music!
If you can sing it, you can play it.
Now people are like, “It’s so hard to memorize music!” I’m like, “Really? Come on! You can do it!”
And then I ask them to sing it, and they can sing it. They know the tune! If we’re playing a song, and they miss a note, and I say, “Well can you sing it?”… and they can sing it! They’ve memorized the tune.
Once you’ve memorized the tune, you know the tune. Don’t confuse not being able to play it with not having the song memorized. This doesn’t matter what instrument you’re playing, if you can sing the tune, if you can sing it in your head…You know the tune.
Even if you don’t sing it out loud, you know the tune, so practicing singing these tunes is a great way to memorize them! I don’t care what the tune is, if it’s “Sally Good” and it’s […] or if it’s Redwing […] and if you can sing it, you’ll be able to play it.
Now once you can sing it, you’re going to have to take the time to figure out what the fingerings are that match those notes. But that’s a whole other thing, that’s just learning to play the tune.
You’ve already got it in your head, so listen to the tune, sing the tune in your head, sing the tune out loud if you’re brave. And before you know it, you will be picking up these songs and these tunes so fast, you won’t believe it’s even possible.
Have an awesome week!
