One of the prettiest waltzes I know, and one of the hardest to play well, Gardenia waltz was written by the amazing Texas swing fiddler Johnny Gimble.
Forked Deer
Forked Deer is a great tune, that I always enjoy playing with Brent Hawley. I originally learned it off of a Buddy Spicher recording where he announced the tune saying, “Look at the rack on that deer!”
Summertime
This is one of my all-time favorite tunes to play. I really love the minor bluesy feeling. I originally learned it from the 4 World Champion Fiddlers Album, as played by Texas Shorty (Jim Chancellor).
Honeysuckle Rose
Honeysuckle Rose is a Swing Tune written by Fats Waller as performed by me and Brent Hawley at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins, CO. November 21, 2010
Cripple Creek
I had an awesome opportunity to open for April Verch last night at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins. I was lucky enough to also have Brent Hawley available to join me on guitar. Thanks to Rob at Avo’s, Brent, and April for helping make it happen.
I’m going to be posting some videos from this gig. The first is cripple Creek.
Playing Fiddle in a Band Workshop Notes
Here are the notes from our November fiddling workshop. We talked about starting out with playing simple slow notes in the background, and progressing to rhythmic accompaniment, licks, solos, and harmonies.
We also covered big picture approach issues, including playing like you mean it, not stepping on the soloist, playing with feeling, and listening for space. And, never take all of the space that’s available.
Opening for April Verch – Avogadro’s Number
I am totally stoked for this weekend because I have the opportunity to be the opening act for The April Verch Band this Sunday night at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins, CO.
April Verch is one of the top Canadian Fiddlers, and she’s a heck of a stepdancer too. I am sure that you will enjoy her playing.
I am so excited to be opening for such a talented musician. I hope you all can come to see April Play (and me too).
If you are not familiar with April, you can check out her website, or watch the video below:

Sir Ken Robinson – Schools Kill Creativity
This TED talk is brilliant. It discusses how talented creative people who don’t fit the traditional school mold are stifled and often crushed in our current educational environment. I is funny, smart, and touching.
